A fascinating love story between two teenagers of different nationalities began in wartime Taiwan and ended happily in America. Paul Hsieh, a natural born Sweet Potato, delineates the grief of being a second-class citizen in colonial Taiwan and under Chinese dictatorship in his work of historical fiction. Through explicit English with an oriental flavor, Hsieh portrays nostalgia of his experiences in his beautiful native land, torn by the Japanese invasion of China, World War II, the Taiwanese rebellion under Chinese rule, and widespread extortion, torture, and execution amidst civil war in China. Hsieh’s central character, Ken, immigrates to the New World as a first-generation Taiwanese to escape from persecution and pursue a better life with nothing but tenacity.
The novel Sweet Potato lives as a legacy to future generations and a window into the bloody history of 20th century Taiwan.
